This is the way the mBones of the armature look inworld now – the green glowy lines. 159 bones now, in this teen aged armature. Armature bones for face, fingers, wings, tail and animal hind legs. In 2014 or so, artists began to make “fitted” mesh we could rig to the collision bones, to make attached clothing or an attached mesh body move with the Appearance sliders. Each collision bone is clamped to its mBone parent, so that a vertex weighted with PELVIS, (the collision bones are in CAPS), will move with its clamped parent, mPelvis.Ī few years later we got a few more bones for feet and skull. The Second Life armature, about fifteen years ago, consisted of 21 movement bones – “mBones” plus 26 collision bones, which at that time, besides keeping avatars from walking through each other, were used in the inworld Appearance sliders, to make the default avatar fatter or thinner, more muscular, and the ever-popular big boobs and butt.

I think this information should have been made more public years ago. Along the way I floundered like a beached jellyfish and ran around the mulberry bush like a hound chasing imaginary rabbits.

What we have to work with are three Second Life sources: avatar_skeleton.xml, male_2016_08_05.dae,, and. Then I’ll use what I learn to do the Default Bento Female for the next Ruth release. What I want is a replica of the Default Bento Male in Blender 2.8x, so I can use it to rig the next release of Roth, and get it exported from Blender 2.8x and into an opensimulator grid without tears. Now that I rather painfully figured out how collision bones export from Blender so that they almost work inworld, it’s time to tackle the mBones.

If you are interested in Bento download and install the latest official Second Life viewer (version 5.58). There are many opportunities and possibilities using Bento in Second Life going forward. Hopefully other third party viewer will integrate Bento very soon. Today Bento provides more realistic improved facial expressions, animations and a better range of avatar body types than ever before.įirestorm has plans for Bento to be integrated into the viewer at some point in the near future (no ETA yet). Now everyone can enjoy the extra bones creators have taken advantage of to bring you true quadrupeds, winged avatars, fingers, facial expressions and more.įor those that don’t know already Project Bento adds over 30 bones to the avatar’s face, hands, joints and attachment points.

Linden Lab is proud to announce that Project Bento is now part of the default Viewer! Bento is probably the single most extensive update to the avatar skeleton ever, and as a result of countless hours of testing, updating, reconfiguring, testing… you get the picture, we are now live! Interest in Bento has grown over the past year and that’s always a good thing to see. It’s almost been a year since Linden Lab first introduced Project Bento back in mid December 2015 and so much has been improved during the past year.

This is one of the biggest updates to the Second Life avatar has ever had on the main grid. On Monday 5th December Linden Lab announced that Project Bento is now live on the main grid and it’s now part of the Second Life default viewer at long last.
